What to Look for in a New Water Heater

If you’re like most homeowners in Bloomington, IL, you probably don’t give much thought to your water heater. However, it’s a critical part of your plumbing system, and you’ll quickly notice if it has a problem. When you’re planning a new water heater installation, look for these three key features.

Water Heating Capacity

Consider how much hot water your household uses every day. The Department of Energy reports that in a typical American household of four people, 64 gallons of hot water are needed daily. If you have a household of more than four people, or you use a lot of hot water for showering, bathing, laundry, or cleaning, you may need a tank with a bigger capacity. Storage tanks are large, so you’ll need to ensure that your home can fit a unit with a larger tank. In such households, a tankless water heater might be a good option. Tankless water heaters can supply a virtually unlimited amount of hot water, and they don’t require a bulky storage tank.

Fuel Type

There is gas, electric, and geothermal-powered water heaters. You might also consider a heat pump water heater. In the summertime, they use the heat energy from your home to heat the water. Gas and electric rates vary, and not all areas offer natural gas pipelines or propane delivery services.

Energy-Efficiency

You might be surprised to learn that water heating accounts for about 18% of a typical household’s energy use, explains the Department of Energy. Look for a water heater with the Energy Star certification. It’s available for both electric and gas-powered water heaters. There are Energy Star-certified storage tanks and tankless water heating systems. Choosing an energy-efficient water heater could lower your home’s utility bills by up to $400 per year.
